This research project was conducted in 2014 to better understand the growing market of wearables and how they might fit into our daily lives. The task was to construct a framework for wearable devices and smartphone applications so that they designers/developers can create usable applications that enhance users' daily lives. This specific project focuses on the daily use case of sleep habits.
BRAINSTORMING, IDEATION, WIREFRAMING
Over several months, I spent time reading research papers, observing peers, scouring forums and learning about the science behind sleep. These research learnings and user studies then became design recommendations in the form of sketches.
AN OBSERVATIONAL STUDY
SLEEP HYGEINE RESEARCH
One main component of research was to ask friends and family to take photos of their sleeping environments. This helped me dig into and understand more about the importance of sleep hygiene.
PROOF OF CONCEPT
This observational study then led into a proof of concept in the form of "on-demand" sleep tips every evening. For one full week, I messaged 11 individuals to ask them about mental and physical stress levels to determine what is the best method to help them get good quality sleep.
